Can I get into these colleges?

I'm a junior in high school, my class is very competitive, so I'm just barely out of the top 10%. Here are my stats: GPA (Unweighted) - 3.68 GPA (Wighted) - 4.08 Student of the month x3 Varsity Badminton - 3 years, will be 4 next year. Varsity Tennis - 2 years, 3 years next year. Vice-President of MSA Green Club Envirothon National Honor Society National Art Honor Society I'm taking all honors classes and AP Calculus, but I'm also taking the AP English Lang & Comp test because I'm sure I can do well on it, without taking the class. By the end of this year, I've calculated that my unweighted GPA should be 3.72 and my weighted 4.32, I think that should move me into the top 10%. My major is more than likely going to be Computer Science, but I'm still debating whether to do Computer Science or Computer Engineering. I have a passion for computers, I took apart my first computer back in the 6th grade, I have experience in all sorts of troubleshooting, and I love programming. What are my chances of getting into the following colleges: MIT University of California - Berkeley University of Southern California UCLA Stanford University Carnegie Melon University of Maryland - College Park University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign University of Michigan - Ann Arbor California Institute of Technology Johns Hopkins At the moment I'm taking GT C++ Programming, I've taken Visual Basic and JavaScript/HTML programming as well. I applied for a work study internship at NSA for next school year, and if I get it I will be taking 4 classes. AP Calculus BC, AP Computer Science, AP English, Honors Econ, and Heatlh. If I don't get it, then I will be taking AP Calculus BC, AP Physics B, AP Computer Science, AP English, AP Economics, AP Psychology, Honors Forensics, Health, Teachers Aid, and Computer Repair (A+ Certification). I took the March SAT, and won't receive my score till April 1st I think but I'm confident I got at least a 1900, not very high, but it was my first time and I just wanted to get a feel for the test before studying for it. I will be retaking it in September, and I'm confident I can get at least a 2100 on it. But please give your opinions going on the assumption that I get around a 2000 on it, just to be safe. Thanks in advance! =] I forgot to mention Cornell University.

Moving To California - Few Questions?

I've decided to move to California, I currently reside in Waterloo,Iowa (Yes, I know huge change) I'm thinking San Diego? I've heard both good and bad things. I'm a computer tech now, and plan on doing the same there. I have my A+ and plan on getting more certifications before I move, I know I wont make much but is this possible? Typical rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in a area of town where I wont get shot at on a daily basis? I have a deffered judgement on a theft felony charge from about 4 years ago, it will be erased when I pay off all my restitution, is this going to hinder me from finding a computer related job? Basicly what it come's down to is, am I going to be able to survive on what looks like 40-45K a year, and not be in poverty? I have ton's more questions but not enough space so any opinions on maybe other good cities to live in (halfway near the beach please), apartment rent prices, jobs, ect - Basicly any info you have, please share. Thanks!

You should be fine on $40-45k a year. I make $42K and live 8 blocks from the beach. Middle Income in SD is considered $48k a year from a recent article I read so your somewhat on the lower end, as am I. You're probably not going to save a lot of money but you can pay your bills and have your fun still, but you won't be living lavishly or anything. And if you don't have much debt or any debt that you are making payments on then you should be fine. SD is such a great place to live; you don't have to travel or take trips to go on vacation, you can just go to the beach here. And LA, Orange County, Mexico, and Vegas are all fairly close. Plus the beach is free and there are plenty of things to do in SD where you don't have to spend money. It's such an outdoors type city and there is always events or something going on, so you don't need much extra money to enjoy this place and have a good time. You might be able to make more money b/c my friend just got some IT/computer tech job after just completing his A+ certification and makes $60k a year. He's only 24 and wasn't a computer major in college or anything and doesn't have the most impressive resume. But if you have some experiance, the certifications, and knowledge then you can probably land a job that pays better than you might expect. I live in Pacific Beach which is where you want to be if you're in your 20's, like to have fun, and want that classic SoCal beach culture and scene. PB is great; friendly people, party atmoshphere, great nightlife, good restaurants. The bars are cheap too and much less expensive than downtown Gaslamp Quarter Bars. It's also a pretty compact community and you can walk or get most places on bike, most people here have beach cruisers and it's the best way to get around, especially during summer b/c parking is a pain near the sand. Rent isn't cheap but it's not too bad. I pay $1375 for a 2 bedroom 8 blocks from the beach. Studios and one bedrooms range from $700 on the low end to $1500 for the pricier units. You can probably get a one bedroom for around $900 or $800 within a mile to 1.5 miles of the beach. Eastern Pacific Beach from Lamont St east towards the I-5 freeway are cheaper than areas west and fairly affordable in my opinion. If you want even cheaper check out Clairemont Mesa, it's just east of PB and a pretty cheap and not too bad neighborhood. North Park, Hillcrest, and University Heights just north of Downtown are the more urban neighborhoods in SD and fairly reasonable too with rent and a 15 min drive to the beach. But if you want to live by the beach, which you should if you are coming to CA for that type of scene, then check out apts all over Pacific Beach or even Ocean Beach if you want a more hippy scene. Craiglist, SDReader.com, SignonSanDiego.com are all good sites to check rentals. Honestly I think people exaggerate about how expensive it is to live out here. Maybe i;m used to it b/c I grew up in CA and am from the Bay Area, which makes SD look cheap by comparison. Since you are not looking to buy a house it's not that bad, rental prices aren't completely out of whack like purchasing prices. Gas will be more expensive so have a car with decent MPG. Utilities will probably be lower since most places near the beach don't have AC and if you have a heater that works you only need it at night maybe 10-15 times a year. The weather is great in SD, never too hot or cold near the beach, rarely rains, low humidity, and never severe weather. Pretty much sunny and in the 70's year round. If you have any more question feel free to ask me. If you want that sunny CA lifestlye SD is the place to go for that.

Computer Certifications California

Computer Certifications - The High End

The CCIE is the most prestigious credential one can hold in the IT industry. CCIE stands for Cisco Certified Internet Work Expert and the certificate is truly the Rolls Royce of all computer certifications. The CCIE occupies the number one position on various Top Ten Computer Certificate lists.

However, the CCIE is also the most difficult credential to acquire. One has to sit for a grueling exam that is more difficult than the CPA exam or the State Bar of California, which is considered the most difficult of all the states.

The State Bar Exam of California has a pass rate of 48.2%. No other state in the United States has that low a pass rate. By comparison, the CCIE has a pass rate of only 26%. Some examinees attribute some of the difficulty of the exam to the tremendous amount of determination and self-motivation that is required.

However, CCIE holders complain that their achievement garners no respect outside the industry. While mothers brag about their sons and daughters who are lawyers and CPA's, little is said about the son or daughter with a CCIE. Fortunately, in Silicon Valley it is a different story. A CCIE holder can look forward to an annual salary of about $115,000 or more.

Second on the list of "in demand" certifications is the CISA, which certifies auditors. And there is good news for this group. Auditors are much in demand in a dwindling economy.

Due to phishing, hacking, and spamming, security has become a major issue in the IT industry today.

So security certificates are also in demand. A security certificate that is seen on many "Top Ten" lists is the CCSE. This is a high level security certification for employees who work with check point products and are required to maintain secure VPN's.

Another security certificate that usually makes the Top Ten is the CISSP or Certified Information Security Specialist. A holder of this certificate can look forward to an excellent salary of around $94,000 annually. Only a few years of experience or education are required to qualify and only one exam needs to be passed.

On the other hand, the PMP or Project Management Professional requires an extensive amount of skill and experience. However, once these requirements have been fulfilled and the exam has been passed, one can expect an annual salary in excess of $100,000.

The holder of a CAPM or Certified Associate in Project Management also earns a high salary. However, one can qualify for this certificate with 1500 hours of work on a team or twenty-three hours of project management education. In addition, the candidate must pass a three hours exam consisting of 150 questions.

The MCSD or Microsoft Certified Solution Developer is another certificate that commands a high salary from $70,000 to $120,000 per year. However, one is expected to have more than just developer skills. One must be knowledgeable in the field of enterprise solutions and Microsoft products and then be able to apply business analysis skills to recommend the best solution for a particular business.

There are many other certificates available that enable people who qualify for them to earn high salaries. A quick search of job sites such as Monster or Dice will reveal those most in demand and the salaries offered.

First - Any HR person reading your Objective will not read past it. The phrase "further my career" means it gets filed in the trash!!! All this objective says is what can you do for me. Companies do NOT want to know what they can do for you. They want to know what you can do for them. Second - I think you could do well in an advertising agency - you have advertising, management, computer & graphic design skills - all necessary in the advertising world. Third - making the resume better Be specific about what computer applications you know - do not just say "variety of computer applications". Separate out the different types of skills - database & computer skills, library skills, customer service skills, advertising skills. Makes it easier to see. And its not necessary to put ALL your skills into every resume. You have enough here to pick & choose what you put in. You must PERSONALISE each resume for each application. There is no such thing as a general resume - and this is a very general resume. That means you are not trying hard enough, and tells the company that if you cannot be bothered to do a good job with the resume, then you probably wont do a good job if they hired you. Let me see if I can rework this resume for you. Here you go. EDITED RESUME I changed this from chronological format - which is what you have - to a functional formet which I prefer. You'll need to redo your objective. Dont include the university education if you didnt actually graduate. It just tells the employer that you cant finish what you started. I removed the library skills because they are not really relevant unless you are looking for a library or a legal research job. (And for those you need either an MLS or a paralegal certificate). I think you're worth about $16 per hour to start. Depending on how well you do at an interview though, you might be able to get an offer for $20-$25 per hour.

Is certification required to have a freelance computer repair company?

i was wondering if certifications are required in California for a either a self employed computer tech, or computer repair shop

Nah you don't need it. The certifications are a nice selling point to your customers. You can wow them with your A+. The vendor specific certifications might be nice to have, again it's not necessary but having something like an HP certification or Apple certificaton for instance helps to keep you "in their network" and may give you certain advantages and discounts and access privileges. Customers are only concerned with one thing: that you fix their stuff. As long as you do that well and keep them happy, they could probably care less.
