Chrome Improves Security, Usability as Firefox Slips
On a Windows computer, I recently logged in to the GoToMyPC website to remotely control another computer. When Java is installed, GoToMyPC runs an applet that transparently invokes an EXE to connect to the remote computer.
re.installing free version mcafee security?
hi guys, i am trying to install mcafee security package that came free with my bt option 3 account. i have it working on all 3 laptops in my home which are using x/p, vista and windows 7, all which have mcafee installed and running ok. my home pc running on x/p is somehow not accepting mcafee..it goes as far as pressing download button from page that has a long code numbers and as soon as i press download, the next page comes up as a security alert with top and bottem phrases showing a en tick, then in middle i get a yellow triangle icon which says,my security certificate has expired or is not yet valid, top one says security certificate is from a trusted certifying authority, and bottom says, the security system has a valid name on the page i am trying to view. this security box keeps comming up many times when i try to download mcafee and other stuff, it has never done this on my laptops but eventually it goes away and lets me carry on. i now get into licence agreement page, i pressed i agree, then download page with large code number comes up, i press download then another box fires up saying file download on top, it goes on and says FILE NAME..DMSSETUP-SERIAL.EXE. FILE TYPE APPLICATION. FROM.. DOWNLOAD.MCAFEE.COM ALL IN LOW CASE SORRY. I THENTOOK THE OPTION TO SAVE IT, I THEN GET THE MESSAGE DOWNLOAD COMPLETE. THEN A GREY PAGE FROM MCAFEE COMES UP SAYING UNABLE TO CONTINUE INSTALLATION, IT GOES ON TO SAY THAT THE INSTALLATION CANNOT CONTINUE BECAUSE OF A FILE MAY BE MISSING OR IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. TO FIX THIS YOU MAY NEED TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL A WINDOWS FILE . ONCE COMPLETED LOG INTO UR MCAFEE ACCOUNT, DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL SOFTWARE AGAIN. I AM NOT LOADING FROM A CD, I AM LOADING VIA MY BT ACCOUNT. PLEASE HELP GUYS THIS PC IS RUNNING X/P THANKS GUYS

Norton Security scan?!?
Well, I got this random pop up that claims its Norton... I can not exit it out, I even tried going on task manager trying to end process and there was nothing on it... if it was really norton wouldn't it say norton.exe? I removed everything off my computer that was Norton I believe about a month ago because I am using kaspersky and if there was any norton on my PC I don't think kaspersky would have worked. Though, I did find 3 adwares on my PC with the report I got with kaspersky and deleted them, yet the full scan didn't finished because my computer froze due to probably too much CPU usage.... but since I did have Norton on my PC could it just be that it reinstalled some of it? I found it to be a bit weird though since it was a random pop up and it says ""Welcome to Norton Security scan Welcome! You've installed Norton Security Scan. This free tool quickly and automatically checks your computer for viruses, spyware, adware and other threats as well as your security status ect... click continue to scan your computer now." I do NOT remember EVER installing Norton, I DO NOT like Norton period... Do you think it installed itself back? or could it be more adwares? and before I full scanned my pc with kaspersky I did get taken to this web that said it was scanning my computer and showed a picture of it scanning my computer xD of course I exited out.... And well it says its already installed on my PC, and all I can do is click continue which I am NOT gonna do, and thanks L0v3, I will scan specifically in the C drive with kaspersky and see if it comes up with anything Don Piano- Hmm I don't think I downloaded a google toolbar, but I could have, I don't remember xD.. I did download some things from the Adobe site like flash player and shockwave ect... but I did find the NSS in add/remove programs and I'll try uninstalling it And also on the task manager I found the process named nss.exe and ended it and the pop up went away And actually I wasn't doing anything on the web, I actually went to go walk my dog and came back and it was there.. but I did have firefox open.. Don Piano- Hmm... I could have accidentally accepted to installing NSS not paying attention also I did get it to uninstall and I restarted and it isn't back.. I did an overnight full scan with kaspersky and it found 3 more adwares and got rid of them, well at least said it did and ok just to be on the safe side I guess another opinion wouldn't hurt sravan- Yeah I think it would be weird if it did install on its own, but I did install shockwave today and I could have accepted to installing NSS without paying attention... and now that I think about it... I think after I installed shockwave it wasn't too long after that norton pop up came up anyways thanks everyone so much! its been really helpful
Samuel is correct, the Norton Security Scan (which is legit software by the way) comes bundled with some Google packs/updaters I believe and is installed by default unless you opt out. Have you installed any sort of Google pack recently or just prior to NSS popping up? If not, did you install any other software prior to NSS popping up? I have heard reports of NSS 'freezing' midway through scans. Not sure if this is a conflict issue or a bug issue though... If you do not want NSS, see if it is in your 'Add/Remove programs' or 'Uninstall a program' list (in your Windows Control Panel) and remove it that way. If it is the legit NSS, it should be there. Edit: Is this the one? If so, don't stress; it is legit. Edit: Hmm, it popped up while you were surfing did it? In that case, most definitely seek a second opinion. Download both Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware and perform scans (one after the other). However, do not run MBAM in Safe Mode; it is designed to be most effective in normal mode - and includes a special driver that *does not work* in Safe Mode. Using MBAM in Safe Mode should only be a last resort when all else fails in normal mode. This is advice from the producers of MBAM themselves! Edit: I found this on the official Adobe website: "As part of a recent distribution agreement with Symantec, Adobe will offer its customers the option to install the free Norton Security Scan software as part of the Shockwave Player installation process. Only customers who accept the Norton Security Scan offer will download the Norton Security Scan software. Those who decline the offer will download and install only Shockwave Player. Norton Security Scan is only offered to users who have either already downloaded the Google Toolbar or who are not eligible to receive the Google Toolbar offer." So, in some cases, NSS is connected with Adobe. However, I would still seek a second opinion just to be on the safe side. MBAM and SAS are both very good and will hopefully detect something if you are infected. Keep both and perform regular scans in the future to double-check that nothing slips past Kaspersky (while Kaspersky is considered one of the best, no AV is 100%)
